Kedarnath Temple Significance , Kedarnath

History of Kedarnath:
Legend goes that Nara and Narayana – two incarnations of Vishnu performed severe penance in Badrikashraya of Bharat Khand, in front of a Shivalingam fashioned out of earth. Pleased with their devotion, Lord Shiva appeared in front of them and said that they may ask for a boon. Nar and Narayan requested Shiva to take up a permanent abode as a Jyotirlingam at Kedarnath so that all people who worship Shiva shall be freed from their miseries.

Kedarnath is named after honor of King Kedar, who ruled in the Satya Yuga. He had a daughter named Vrinda who was a partial incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. She performed austerities for several years and the land is named after her as Vrindavan.
However, Kedarnath and its temple exist from the Mahabharata , the Pandavas after having won over the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra war, felt guilty of having killed their own brothers and sought the blessings of Lord Shiva for redemption.

Lord Shiva unwilling to give darshans to the Pandavas filed Kashi to live incognito in Guptkashi, where eventually he was detected by the Pandavas. Besides,
One of  brother's Bhima then straddled the valley and heard to pass beneath him, reasoning that the only Bull to refuse must be Shiva himself  .On being followed ,when Shiva was unmasked ,he dived into the ground, when Bhima grambled from behind ,and held on tight .how ever all the remained of God is rear.Leaving behind HIS hump on the surface. This conical protrusion is worshipped as the idol in the shrine. yet another popular legend related to Kedar Temple
.
Goddess Parvati worshipped Kedareshwar to unite with Shiva as Ardhanareeswarar
The remaining portions of Lord Shiva are worshipped at four other places - the arms (bahu) at Tungnath, mouth (mukh) at Rudranath, navel (nabhi) at Madmaheshwar and hair(jata) at Kalpeshwar. Together with Kedarnath, these places are known as the Panch Kedar.

About Legend:-

The sannadhi of the Lord is facing South. The lingam at Kedarnath is pyramidal, unlike its usual form. An unusual feature of the temple is the head of a man carved in the triangular stone fascia of the temple.

A statue of Nandi - the celestial bull stands at the entrance of the temple and exquisitely carved image adorn the interiors of the temple.

About Kedarnath Dham:-
Among the twelve Jyothirlings of Lord Shiva, the shrine of Kedarnath is one amongst famous holiest pilgrimage centers for the Hindus. Kedarnath presents a majestic sight, sanding in the middle of a wide plateau surrounded by lofty snow clad peaks. The temple is said to have been built in the 8th century by the Vedic Guru Sri Adi Sankara. The inner walls of the assembly hall are decorated with figures of various deities and scenes from mythology. Outside the temple, a large statue of the Bull Nandi stands as guard dedicated to Lord Shiva. Kedarinath temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. A conical formation of a rock inside the Sanctum Sanctorum of the temple at Kedarnath is worshipped as Lord Shiva in his Sadashiva form.
The five different characteristics of Lord Shiva are signified as Bhairava, Nataraj, Dakshinamurty, Somaskandha and Bhikashadana. All these five qualities represented in one single face are called Sadashiva.
